Remembering Fallen Victims in Spain Saint’s Day for Eutimio, Ramiro, Cándido and Constantino On March 11, 2004, the worst terror attack ever on Spanish soil took the lives of 191 people when terrorist’s bombs exploded in three train stations during the morning rush hour. Aside from the 191 killed, at least 1800 other victims were injured. History remembers those fallen victims as do many mourners in the country of Spain. For those unfamiliar with the tragic event which occurred on March 11, 2004, at least 10 bombs exploded in a frame of only three minutes on Spain’s mass transit system railcars. Of the 10 bombs; three were on a train in Atocha, two in El Pozo and another in Santa Eugenia. The remaining four bombs destroyed another train five hundred metres outside of Atocha. In October 2007, Twenty one Islamist suspects were sentenced for their participation and guilt in what has proven to be the most tragic act of terrorism in the country of Spain to this day. These bombings took place three days before a general election which bears a sort of resemblance to the most recent act of terrorism in Spain in 2008, which was the assassination and murder of one of Spain's political leaders also believed to be the responsibility of ETA Separatists in Spain which ironically took place the Friday before Sunday’s general elections. All events transpiring just days before an election in the country. |
